Wardrobe stylist, costume designer, and personal shopper, Leisel "Q" Quamie sets the standard for stylistic authenticity. Single-handedly infusing personal styles with the latest fashion trends, the Brooklyn, N.Y., native's eye-catching wardrobe selections have created style solutions for everyday people and the world? most recognized celebrities.
After a successful 12-year career in the legal field, Q realized she had unfinished business in the fashion world. On a whim, she enrolled in a styling class, eventually providing her jetsetter status as she studied trend forecasting and fashion styling in London, Paris, Milan, and Florence. With design, color, textile, and fabric knowledge in tow, the former teen model graduated from New York City? Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) with a degree in Fashion Business Management.
From New York to Los Angeles
Equipped with ambition, practical knowledge, and solid relationships among industry giants, for six consecutive seasons Q styled shows for Oscar de la Renta, Nicole Miller, Betsey Johnson, and Anne Bowen during the exclusive Mercedes-Benz 7th on Sixth fashion shows. After making her mark in New York, Q moved to Los Angeles.
Receiving international exposure as a stylist on four seasons of UPN's television hit, "America's Next Top Model" and season one of "The Tyra Banks Show," Q eventually became Banks' personal stylist. Q's work with the supermodel, including styling her for Oprah Winfrey's Legends Ball, garnered praise from Vogue's legendary Editor-at-Large, Andre Leon Talley, who declared, "Tyra finally has good people around her".
Meeting Keisha Whitaker, wife of Academy Award?-winning actor Forest Whitaker, introduced a new opportunity for Q after her work with Tyra Banks. Keisha contacted Q to style Forest Whitaker for his Public and Essence magazine photo shoots in early 2006. After those successful shoots, Q began styling Forest for the appearances surrounding his role as Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in Fox Searchlight Pictures riveting biopic, ?he Last King of Scotland. These appearances include the 64th Annual Golden Globe Awards, The View, Saturday Night Live, and the 79th Annual Academy Awards.
While new stories have emerged from every styling opportunity, the project undoubtedly closest to Q's heart is "Beauty & Love?ove & Beauty," a workshop she designed for teen girls to embrace self-empowerment and self-image.
When Q is not conducting workshops, corporate seminars, or personal shopping as president of national image consulting firm Styling Your Image, LLC, she teaches fashion classes at San Francisco? Academy of Art University. In addition to her current work with Whitaker, actor Russell Hornsby, and Atlanta Hawks' guard Josh Childress, Q has styled photo shoots featuring actress Angela Bassett, racer Dale Earnhardt, Jr., and actress Hilary Duff, among others. Q's editorial and advertising work includes Entertainment Weekly, People, TV Guide Canada, DELL computers, and Coca-Cola.
