Rick Ramsey was born and raised in New York City. He decided he wanted to make the fashion industry his life’s vocation at a young age. Ramsey enrolled in F.I.T in NYC and thrived in design classes and fashion history at Toby Coburn. After traveling to Paris and London to study independently, he recalls his first fashion job back at home in NY was with Audrey Smalts and the ground crew. He worked many of the top designer shows of the day, such as Bill Blass, Calvin Klein, Steven Burroughs and Matsuda, and got his first chance to see what really went on behind the scenes in the world of fashion show production. It wasn’t long after that he got “the bug”
Immersing himself in the world of fashion and surrounding himself with the likes of industry friends such as models and photographers, One day he found himself at a photo shoot and was introduced to the concept of a stylist. He got an up close and personal look at the job of a stylist.
Ramsey started out assisting a friend who knew his passion and level of formal training. It was she that began to help him develop his technical skills. Ramsey ended up being recommended as an assistant to the accessories editor at Essence Magazine. When his boss left after a year, he was invited to take her place as Accessories editor by then fashion editor Harriette Cole. Ramsey remembers being thrilled to see his name on the Mast Head for the first time. Rick went on to be a fashion and accessories market editor. He began to travel to exotic destinations to shoot fashion.
Rick’s talent for conceptualizing interesting and relevant fashion stories and his well rounded Technical experience made him a perfect candidate to go out on his own as a freelance stylist. Since then we’ve seen the credit Rick Ramsey attached to the fashion pages of many of our top publications. Rick has worked with celebrities such as Sean Puffy Combs, Eman, Latifa, Kerri Washington, Rhiana, and Jay Zee to name a few. He also wears the hat of a prop stylist. He is one of the few stylists who is well versed at both. He has worked as a set dresser along side great set designers for a number of years. Rick’s had 15 + years of experience in varied style capacities ranging from fashion & accessories editing to conceptualizing and stylizing, His most recent ventures have been elevated to Art and Style Directing ad campaigns. Ramsey says “I attribute my continued inspiration and love for all things visual to my blissfully happy, Technicolor childhood! Thanks Mom!”
