The Make-Up Artists' Guide to Sparkling Winter Looks

Posted Dec 18th 2006 5:00AM by Stylelist Editor

Brighten gloomy winter days with a little sparkle, make-up artist Merrell Hollis for KBA/kenbarboza.com recommends. The artist who regularly lights up the faces of clients like 'Sex and the City''s Kim Cattrall and Grammy golden girl, Mary J. Blige assures "You can easily create a fresh look." We asked Merrell, Lazarus Jean-Baptiste also for KBA/kenbarboza.com -- make-up artist for Iman's book 'The Beauty of Color' -- and the talented Rachel Ebgi to show us how in three steps.

Step 1: Moisture Your Way to Shine

Start with a moisturizer, all three artists suggest. Rachel's favorite is MAC Strobe Cream. "It's a light iridescent moisturizer that's versatile, so you can wear it under foundation or as a highlighter on your cheeks and brow bones," she says. Merrell advises staying away from heavy matte powders in the winter because those tend to dry out your skin. As an alternative, he likes to "go light with sheer foundation by Laura Mercier." If you want to add sparkle to your whole body, Lazarus suggests trying Jergens Soft Shimmer Skin Radiance. "It can be used by all skin types because it is fairly translucent and has a little gold shimmer."

Step 2: Light Up Your Eyes

"I love pigment eye shadows by MAC that are 100 percent color and have finely grated sparkles that look natural," Merrell raves. The trick is to choose a pigment that's close to your skin tone. "Darker skin is accented with brown or copper colors and yellow skin looks great in shades of gold," says Merrell. Lazarus' favorite eye shadow is Vincent Longo's Wet Diamonds. "It comes in Concerto that is great for dark skin and Dawn Flesh or Jewel 69 that are perfect if your skin is fair. Tempest Bronze is another great shade that works for any skin tone." For Rachel, "There's no such thing as too much mascara, especially if you are going for a natural glowing look. Mascara will define your eyes. I love L'Oreal's Voluminous."

Step 3: Add Shimmer to your Lips

To complete a glowing look Merrell turns to glistening lips. "You can use the same sparkling pigment you used on your eyes, on your lips too. Just put it in the middle of your lips to create a pout."
